About
21st-century superstars blending traditional pansori with alternative pop. LEENALCHI is an alternative seven-piece band that reimagines traditional Korean pansori storytelling through a contemporary lens. The ensemble features a unique lineup of four vocalists, two bassists, and a drummer, blending traditional vocal techniques with danceable, new-wave-influenced rhythms. The band gained massive international recognition through their "Feel the Rhythm of Korea" collaboration with the Korea Tourism Organization and their 2020 debut album, SUGUNGGA. Formed in 2019, the group consists of graduates from Seoul National University's traditional music department alongside veterans of the Korean indie scene, including bassist/producer Jang Young-gyu (SsingSsing, Kiha and the Faces). Their sound has been described by critics as the "sexiest album of 2020," earning them three trophies at the 18th Korean Music Awards, including Musician of the Year and Best Modern Rock Song. Their work often features collaborations with the Ambiguous Dance Company, further bridging the gap between traditional heritage and modern club culture.
