Formed in 2015 by Jonathon Lopez, Provoker began as a solo project inspired by scoring fictional horror films. The project evolved into a full band after Lopez met vocalist Christian Crow Petty at a film screening, blending synth-driven experimental structures with R&B-influenced vocals. The lineup was later rounded out by bassist Will Palacios. The group is recognized for a sound that navigates the intersection of post-punk, synthwave, and darkwave, often incorporating themes of alienation, 1980s horror tropes, and video game imagery. Since their 2018 debut EP Dark Angel, they have released full-length albums through the Swedish label YEAR0001, including Body Jumper (2021) and Demon Compass (2023).
